Artists Statement
I guess you could say Mark was like a friend and a distant son to me in a lot of ways. I
met him through my son, Slash Coleman. They went to college and played in a jazz
band together. When Mark came to my house, the two of them would always end up
getting out their instruments and jamming. Since I love the blues so much, I always
put in my special blues requests. Sometimes I would even take out my harmonica and
sit it on a jam session.
When I first heard my son was putting together a play for Mark’s son, the idea of
painting a picture and giving all the proceeds to his son just came to me. I’m not a
portrait artist so I left everything in Mark’s hands. I completed the painting in 12 days
and what I painted is…well, it’s the way I would envision Mark….blowing his horn with
an angel or two.

house. Before Mark went off to neon school, I remember

and I wasn’t at home at the time so he left the sign in the
